Flicka!

Here's a picture of me riding Flicka at
Harper Valley Farm.

Flicka is a 1993, Dandy Zippo, Appaloosa mare that I rode and trained on at Harper Valley Farm. I fell absolutely in love with her!

These photos (left and above) of Flicka and me were taken in May 1997, at one of my first rated horse shows.  We were very successful that day!

This was one of my first "away" shows and I had a great time! Flicka was a good girl and I gained some much needed experience! The blue ribbons wouldn't always come this readily, but it was fun to "savor the moment!" I'll never forget that day.

Ribbons!

Flicka was owned by Harper Valley Farm. The entire time I was riding her there I knew there was a chance someone would buy her. In November 1997 I received some bad news... Flicka had been sold! I was heartbroken as I went to my jumping lesson that evening at Brookwood Equestrian Center. My trainer at Brookwood had written "see me" next to my name on the lesson board. She explained that there was a new horse in the barn that she felt I might like...she wanted me to try her out that night. I went to the stall the horse was supposed to be in and could hardly believe my eyes...it was Flicka! I turned to ask my Mom what was going on and there she stood...camera clicking away! I looked at the chart next to Flicka's stall and the space for owner's name had my name, Kate Jowell in it! I can hardly express how I felt the moment it started to sink in that Flicka was mine...my early, surprise Christmas gift!

Left: This photo was taken at about the moment I finally started to realize that Flicka was really mine! If you look closely I think it looks as though Flicka was smiling too!

Below: Here's Flicka getting tucked in after our lesson on her first night in her new home. I always kissed her one and only Appaloosa spot on her cheek for good luck!

Goodnight kiss!
Flicka was going well on the flat, but jumping was new to her! She learned fast. Thanks to the staff, the trainers and the other knowledgeable boarders at Brookwood, I learned how to properly care for her and help advance her training as a Hunter!

In June of 1998 Flicka suffered a stone bruise and needed some time off.  She went back to Harper Valley Farm to get better.  While she was there we were allowed to have Andrew, another of their horses, on loan from them. That way I would have a horse to ride and Andrew could be introduced to the Hunter ring. During the time that Andrew was with me, my mom and the trainers at Brookwood all decided he was a better match for me...not a better horse...but a better match for me.  It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, but I reluctantly agreed.  So it was worked out for me to keep Andrew instead. I then became the owner of one of the cutest little black Appaloosas you've ever seen!  I would like to add that Flicka is happy, healthy, and much loved at Harper Valley Farm!
